Question
Three high school participated in a study to evaluate the effectiveness of a new computer-based
mathematics curriculum. Four 24-student sections of freshman algebra were available for the
study. The two types of instruction (standard curriculum, computer-based curriculum) were
randomly assigned to the four sections in each of the three schools. At the end of the term, a
standard mathematics achievement test was given to each of the 24 students in each section.
a. Is this study experimental, observational, or mixed experimental and observational? Why?
b. Identify important factors, factor levels, and/or factor-level combinations.
c. Classify these factors as within- or between-subjects
d. what’s the dependent measures?
e. What is the basic experiment unit of study?
Explanation / Answer
There are 3 highschools and each of them have 4 sections of each 24 students
There are two types of instructions: Standard curriculum and computer based curriculum
.
Part a) this study is experimental because we do not simply observe the performance of students, but we randomly assign them two different techniques that is impose control over the technique of teaching and then observe their performance, such a research is considered to be experimental
.
Part b) 3 factors: highschools, type of instruction and scores
Highschool has two level s: level 1 there are 3 highschools, level -2 each highschool has 4 sections and each section has 24 students
Type of instruction: has 1 level and it is divided into two: standard and computer based
Scores: has no levels
.
Part c) The factor highschool has between subjects components as there are 3 schools and 4 sections
The factor type of instruction also has between subjects as there are 2 different types available
The 24 students in each section are within subjects
.
Part d) The dependent measure is the score on the test
.
Part e) The basic experimental unit is “student” in each section
