1.8 Identify whether the following statements indicate the data are experimental or observational: a. Investigation of the relationship between the occurrence of sickle-cell b. Evaluation of a new technique of teaching first graders to read c. A study of female college graduates who go to graduate school d. A study of accident rates in urban areas e. Determination of the effectiveness of an advertising program f. Evaluation of the new lighting system in a factory work area anemia and ethnic backgroundExplanation / Answer
In observational studies the researcher has no control over the variables , simply observes the study participants and measures variables without assigning any treatments
An experiment consists in applying treatment to a group and then recording the effect and bases the conclusions depending on the results obtained from the group.
Having said that, we can easily see that options a,b ,e and f are experimental as evaluating, determining and investigating would require us to record some effects by applying treatments.
On the other hand, options c and d are observational, because we are just observing the groups in these two cases.
