NEED HELP ON THIS PROBLEM:

An article by a researcher reported on a long-term study of the effects of hurricanes on tropical streams in forests. The study shows that one particular hurricane had a significant impact on stream water chemistry. The following table shows a sample of 10 ammonia fluxes in the first year after the hurricane. Data are in kilograms per hectare per year. Complete parts (a) through (e) below. 163 134 173 97 121 179 74 55 59 180 a. Obtain and interpret the quartiles. Type integers or decimals.)

Explanation / Answer

First we arrange the data in ascending order,

55, 59, 74, 97, 121, 134, 163, 173, 179, 180

a) since 10 is even number, the median of above data is average of middle two values ( that is average of 5th and 6th value)

Median = Q2 = (121 + 134) /2 = 255/2 = 127.5

Now, 1st quartile is the middle value of the lower half of the median that is 3rd value and 3rd quartile is the middle value of the upper half of the median that is 8th value.

Therefore, 1st quartile is Q1 = 74 and 3rd quartile is Q3 = 173

Hence,

Q1 = 74

Q2 = 127.5

Q3 = 173
