Question

Four techniques of teaching algebra are to be compared in five high schools. Four mathe- matics teachers are randomly selected in each of the five schools and the four techniques are randomly assigned to the teachers. The students are given a standardized algebra exam at the end of the semester with the average score in each classroom used as the measure of the effec- tiveness of the teaching technique. Therefore, five measurements of the teaching effectiveness are obtained for each of the four teaching techniques (a) What type of experimental design is this? Identify the subjects, the experimental units, the treatments and the response variable. ould it be appropriate to use the AOV F test to evaluate whether there is a difference in the average scores of the four teaching techniques? (b) W (c) If your answer above is Yes, what are the assumptions for the assumptions for the test? Explain how you will design the experiment to ensure that the assumptions are met.

Explanation / Answer

a)

This is a quantitative study of Independently designed measurements where the effectiveness of tecaching techniques are compared by measuring the students performance in test. This a independent measure technique because the teachers and the teaching techniques are assigned independently to the five schools.

The Subjects of study are the students in a classrom whose test score being measured. The Experimental unit is mean test score of a classroom. The treatments are the teaching techniques that need to be assigned to various classroom to determine the response variable effectiveness of the teaching techniques.

b)

Yes, The AOV(Analysis Of Variance) F-test can be used to test the hypothsis that there is a difference in the average test scores of the four techniques.

c)

There are three essential assumption to conduct the AOV F-test. These are explained as below;

Design of Experiment- To avoid the violation of these assumptions, following points need to be concern while designing the experiments
