Question
A planoconvex lucite lens 4.4 cmin diameter is placed on a flat piece of glass as in the figure 34-18 in the textbook. When 560 ?nmlight is incident normally, 46 bright rings are observed, the last one right at the edge.
(A)What is the radius of curvature of the lens surface?
Express your answer using two significant figures.
(B)
What is the focal length of the lens?
Express your answer using two significant figures.
PHYS 2426 University Physics II (40373) Summer II 2018 Ch 34 HW Problem 34.36 placed on a flat plece of glass as in the figure 34-18Explanation / Answer
The relation,
r = ?[(m+0.5)?.R]
Where, r is radius, R is radius of curvature, m is the order and ? is the wavelength
Given, r = radius of the lens = 4.4 cm/2 = 2.2 cm
m = 46, ? = 560 nm
Radius of curvature of the lens,
R= r^2/[(m+0.5)?] = (0.022)^2/[46.5 x 560 x 10-9]
= 18.59 m (Ans)
Focal length,
1/f = (n-1)/R ; n for lucyte is 1.495
f = R/(n-1) = 18.59/0.495 = 37.55 m (Ans)
