Question
Part I. Data were collected on more than 240,000 speeding tickets issued by the Minnesota State Highway Patrol overthe last three years. A random sample of 100 of the tickets issued was selected and the age of the speeder for those tickets is shown in Mini Tab output below Stem-and-leaf of age sample N-100 Boxplot of age sample 12 1 666777888899 39 2 000111122222222333334444444 (14) 2 55667788888889 47 3 0000011223344 34 3 5556778888889 21 4 01344 16 4 667999 10 5 24 8 5567 5 6 001 2 6 59 Leaf Unit1 Examine the plots above. Which of the following terms apply in describing the shape of the Age distribution? (Score:2, 1 or 0) A. Unimodal Multimodal Left Skewed Bimodal Symmetrical Right Skewed . Give the name for (but do not calculate) the appropriate statistical summaryfor (a) the centerand (b) the spread of the variable Age (Score:2,1 or 0) a. Center: b. Spread: Briefly explain why thesedata would hold the shape that they do. (Score: 2, 1 or 0) The five-number summary for these data is 16, 22, 28, 38, 69. Use this information to calculate the upper limit outside which a high outlieron Age would fall. (Score:1or 0)Explanation / Answer
Five number summary is 16, 22, 28, 38, and 69.
Minimum = 16
Q1 = 22
Median = 28
Q3 = 38 and
Maximum = 69
lower limit is Q1 - 1.5*IQR
Where IQR = Q3 Q1 = 38 - 22 = 16
lower limit = 22 - 1.5*16 = -2
Upper limit = Q3 + 1.5*IQR = 38 + 1.5*16 = 62
therefore obwervation 69 is outlier in this data set
