Environmental Health Problem: Acid Rain
Introduction:
Acid rain implies to rain water that contains a pH level that falls below 5.6 (Morgan, 2010). It has been ascertained as one of the key causes of environmental degradation in the universe currently. There exist various industrial as well domestic factors that are agents of acidic rain. What follows is the causes as well as the effects of acidic rain.
Causes of Acid Rain:
The key cause of acid rain is pollution by toxic gases that are discharged into the atmosphere. Such gases include oxides of metals such as nickel, copper and zinc, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide. Most of these tainted gases are discharged as a waste product of numerous industrial procedures. Pre dominant transportation methods like trains and motor vehicles are other leading origins of pollutant gases that are discharged in the atmosphere (Dinar, 2011). It is also important to note that natural happenings such as volcanic eruptions have the capacity of releasing smoke which contains gases into the atmosphere.
Effects of Acid Rain:
Acid rain has various hazardous impacts to both the environment and human beings, therefore affecting all sectors of the economy other organizations in terms of low food supply because of its effect on the soil hence little produce. (Reed, 2014). First, it has the ability of altering the natural soil pH and this makes it challenging and complex to undertake agriculture in the affected areas. For the fact that crops need a specific pH degree to ensure optimum growth, any change in the value of the pH, be it downwards or upwards, will lead to meager harvests. Second negative impact acid rain brings with it is the destruction it cause to the vehicles, bridges and buildings therefore making this issue impact negatively on all organizations in terms of their financial budgeting and maintenance of their property and assets. This is because of its acidic nature, acid rain corrodes the metal and paint that make up cars as well as the materials used to make houses especially the roofing. This only means that buildings which are subjected to acidic rain have high chances of collapsing and breaking easily due to the corrosion that takes place which makes them to wear off gradually.
Acid rain possess the unrelenting capacity to obliterate and erase metal and stone, the materials considered to be the most resilient (Kumar, 2004). Tombstones, old buildings and monuments contain suave signs of acidic deterioration and corrosion. Deposition of acid significantly accelerates weathering brought about by agents like wind, snow, sun and rain. Recent research shows that acidic rain has caused the acidification of streams and lakes and subsequently has contributed to the damage of trees which occur at greater elevations, for instance red spruce species above 2000 feet, and various forest soils which are sensitive. The health of human beings and animals are not spared either as they are negatively affected. Acidic rain causes asthma and other chronic infections of the lungs as a result of the acidic particles breathed in. this causes effects on the employees working in many organizations and the organizations are required with the aid of the financial management team set aside emergency funds and medical funds for its employees. (Reed, 2014). The particulates of nitrates and sulfates can cause bronchitis and heart complications. Through inhalation of such components the respiratory system can be severely weakened (Dinar, 2011).
Discussion:
Generally the environmental impacts of acidic rain have been frustrating. The country of Scandinavia has seen the demolition of over 5000 aquatic ecosystems due to acidic down pour and subsequently Canada has lost fish in an approximated 4000 streams and lakes. Additionally to the demolition of the aquatic life forest covers have not been an exception (Morgan, 2010). Forests found in the Jizera Mountains of Czech Republic have been stripped to the state where two thirds of the entire fir trees are totally stripped of all the covers. Even though various people may claim that these circumstances do not impact human life, the truth is that mankind is subjected to a grave health risk. Definitively, statistics demonstrates that acid rain continues to be a public health concern in addition to being an environmental issue (Jakubiak, 2012). Even though this argument is an open fact, what is maybe even clearer is the point that this occurrence is the consequence of human activities.
Debatably, nature releases significant compounds of nitrogen and sulphur into the surrounding; these are naturally produced through degeneration of organic matter in wetlands and swamps. As indicated before, however, nature possesses its own natural system that aims at circumventing the demolition that is brought about by the acids that naturally occur. This is always through natural production of alkaline chemicals. Current studies submit that the United States of America plays a role in this whole issue. This is for the reason that half of the entire acid rain that is experienced in Canada was produced. For the reason that pollutants have the capacity to move over long distances, there are times when the zones that are big producers of pollutants are not influenced by the end consequences (Reed, 2014). This is something that is unfair but very little can be done about it as the prevailing winds are natural transfer agents. Acidic rain is something that has been given little attention by the world leaders despite the threats that it possess to the environment, economy and even human life. Despite the world leaders talking about it as a threat every day, they are doing very little in terms of policy making to ensure reduced pollution. Taking for instance the U.S who always campaign against pollution while they are always one of the consistent pollutants (Morgan, 2010). There is need for some quick recover actions to be taken against pollution before it is too late.
Conclusion: As identified in the paper, it is apparent that acidic rain has devastating impacts. This is in consideration of the lives of human’s health wise, assists in organizations like cares and roofing , biodiversity including lack of clear and substance free water among others. The impacts can be long term or even just short term just like the intensity of the impacts which can be low, mild or high depending on chemical composition. Despite all these, not all hope is lost as viable solutions to this problem can be worked out. There is need for governments to regulate and even restrict chemical discharges into the atmosphere. This is a problem which needs more attention before it is too late.
