Your epidemiology class team has been asked to figure out the reason for the increase. All athletes with sprained ankles were interviewed about their activities, including participation in outdoor activities other than sports practice. Your group also intervieweda group of other UMKC students without sprained ankles. The following data were gathered: Student Athletes w/Sprained Ankles Other Students Men Women Men Women Winter Activities Ice Skating Ultimate Frisbee Snowball Fights Outdoor stair racing Note: Total number of male student athletes with sprained ankles: 19 18 21 Total number of female student athletes with sprained ankles: 15 Total number of male other students: 30 Total number of female other students: 30 1. What kind of study is this? How can you tell? 2. What sort of measure of risk can you calculate from this kind of study?Explanation / Answer
1) The study is a comparative study. Because the students with sprained ankles( target group) are compared with the other students without sprained ankles( control group) to study the effect of sprained ankles reporting by students during the Fall semester.
2) The measure of risk that can be calculated from this study is " proportion of students with sprained ankles in both the groups" where proportion is defined as the ratio of number of students with sprained ankles to the total number of students in each group.
