Question
Shortly after the introduction of a new? coin, newspapers published articles claiming the coin is biased. The stories were based on reports that someone had spun the coin 200 times and gotten 116 heads ??that's 58?% heads. a) Use the Normal model to approximate the Binomial to determine the probability of spinning a fair coin 200 times and getting at least 116 heads. b) Do you think this is evidence that spinning this new coin is? unfair? Would you be willing to use it at the beginning of a sports? event? Explain
Explanation / Answer
Ans:
a)probability of a fair coin to get a head,p=0.5
n=200
sample proportion=116/200=0.58
z=(0.58-0.5)/sqrt(0.5*(1-0.5)/200)
z=2.26
P(atleast 116 heads)=P(z>=2.26)=0.0118
b)As,probability of getting atleast 116 heads is vey low or less than 0.05,so it is unusual event.
So,the coin seems unfair and we will not be willing to use it at the beginning of a sports event.
