Question
Use the following information for problems .
In June 2013, the mayor of New York City proposed a limit of at most 16 ounces on sugary beverages sold in restaurants. He argued that limiting sugar intake would lower rates of obesity and diabetes. A Gallup poll used a random sample of 1016 US adults on June 15-16. They asked if people support a ban on sugary beverages with over 16 ounces in restaurants. Only 486 respondents said they favored the ban. We want to know if less than half of US adults favor the ban
Before analyzing the data, it was decided a Type I error would be of more concern to the mayor. Describe in context what a Type I error would meanExplanation / Answer
1. Type I error:
In statistical hypothesis testing, type I error means that rejecting null hypothesis when actually it is true.
Example
Let's look at the trail of an accused criminal. The null hypothesis is that the person is innocent, while the alternative is guilty. A Type I error in this case would mean that the person is not found innocent and is sent to jail, despite actually being innocent.
2.
Significance level means probability of type I error.
Decrease the level of significance decrease the probability of type I error.
So here 0.01 is the smallest probability of type one error.
3.
Both type I and type II error occur in our decision but we fix probabilitie of type I error and minimize probability of type II error.
