Question
A common design requirement is that an environment must fit the range of people who fall between the 5th percentile for women and the 95th percentile for men. In designing an assembly work table, we must consider sitting knee height, which is tha distance from the bottom of the feet to the top of the knee. Males have sitting knee heights: mean 21.4 inch, standard deviation of 1.2 inch; women have sitting knee heights : mean 19.6 inch, standard deviation of 1.1. What should be the minimun height of the table? Explain.
Explanation / Answer
Given mean sitting knee height for men=21.4
standard deviation =1.2
lower limit=21.4-1.2=20.2
Upper limit=21.4+1.2=22.6
Mean sitting knee hight for woman=19.6
standard deviation=1.1
Lower limit=19.6-1.1=18.5
Upper limit=19.6+1.1=20.7
For fitting the entire range of people we take the maximum upper limit to accomodate all the possible knee heights in our data
Maximum upper limit=22.6 inches
Hence the minimum height should be 22.6 inches for assembly work table so that all can use the table without the knees feeling cramped up.
