Explanation / Answer

Asteroids are stony fragments, that revolve around the sun in elliptical orbits. Asteroids are not large enough to be called a planet. Asteroids can be of of variable sizes. They can be as big as 940 kms(Ceres) or as small as a tennis ball. These are of variable shape and are generally pitted or cratered. They were mainly formed during the time of solar system formation. Due to the formation of Jupiter the space between the Jupiter and Mars was filled colliding rock fragments, that eventually transformed to the asteroids. About 150 of these asteroids are known have their own moons, some have two moons. When the asteroids come in the reach of Earth's gravitational pull they fall on the surface of the Earth.

Some of the carbonaceous asteroids may contain life forms or some kind of biological material, which can be used to study the primitive forms of life in the planet and help us understand the evolution of life on Earth.

Some of the asteroids have very erratic shaped orbits that often cross Earth's orbit, because of this reason there is a vast possibility of colliding them with the Earth. That's why it is very much intended to study their activity and orbital motions to prevent such collision that can cause devastating results.

Near Earth asteroids are becoming more important day by day mainly because of the fact that they can be exploited for extracting metals and other valuable materials that are getting scarce in the Earth. For this reason many developed countries are now at the edge of sending missions for the purpose.

IN 2001 Nasa's NEAR spacecraft studied Eros and also landed on the surface of the asteroid and successfully became the first of its kind to do such.

In 2006, Japan's Hayabusa successfully landed and took off from the surface of an asteroid.

NASA's Dawn mission in 2011 landed on Vesta asteroid and after one year of study it left for Ceres arriving finally in 2015.

Mainly unmanned spacecrafts are used in these missions. Variable types of spacecrafts have been used for the purpose. For OSIRIS-REx mission a cubic spacecraft was used that use mainly dependent on the touch and go sampling techniques, in this case a liquid nitrogen flow is used to fluidize the regolith. These spacecrafts are aided with a large solar panel for power generation.

there are still many questions that are to be answered from the asteroids, but the exciting one will be the finding of alien lifeforms in the asteroids.
