1.a.The star which appears to be brightest is z which has apparent magnitude of -1.2(from the chart mentioned in the question).The apparent magnitude is denoted by small letter 'm' and it is defined as how much bright the star appears from the earth.The magnitude scale is based on the theory that lower number means greater brightness and higher number means dimmer the star appears from the earth.Therefore star z has least value and will apear brightest.
b.The star u with apparent magnitude +5.7 will appear dimmest from unaided eye because with unaided eyes we can only see stars upto +6.0 on a dark sky.
c.The star y with apparent magnitude +9.6 will require a telescope to be seen in sky as the binocular limit is +9.5(for viewing stars in the sky) and naked eye limit is +6.0(for viewing stars in the sky)
2.a.The stars arrangement as per chart given and from the brightest to the dimmest is a,f,e,d,c,h,b,g as the star a having magnitude 0 will appear brightest and then star f with magnitude 1,star e with magnitude 2,star d with magnitude 3,star c with magnitude 4,star h with magnitude 5,star b with magnitude 6 and lastly star g with magnitude 7 will appears dimmest.
b.The star g with magnitude 7 will appear positive on magnitude scale(largest positive number in the chart) and it is the dimmest star as per explanation given above in the answer.
