Question
30. When playing pool, the first player gets to "break"by hitting the cue ball at a triangular arrangement of 15 balls. The goal on the break is to get 1 or more of the balls into one of the six pockets on the table (just not the cue ball). (a) When you and a friend are playing pool, she always places the cue ball exactly in the middle of the table when breaking, while you always place the cue ball so that it will hit the 15 balls at an angle. If your friend has a much higher percentage of successful breaks than you do, can you conclude that it is because of the placement of the cue ball? Explain (b) Describe how to conduct an experiment to determine which method, straight-on or from an angle, gives you a greater ABILITy to have a successful break. Make sure to describe the explanatory and response variables, the treatments, and how you will use random assignment and control.Explanation / Answer
a) We cannot conclude that the higher success of "break" happens only because of placement of cue balls as there can be other factors like experience of the player in the game, ability to hit the cue ball with certain force and accuracy that can play as a significant factor in the success of "break"
We have to use hypothesis testing to determine if placing the ball is the only significant factor or not
b) The response variable in our experiment is determination of method (angle/straight-on)which gives greater ability to break
The explainatory variables are time period for practice, number of games won , number of attempts before all 15 balls are in the six pockets, training period
We can randomly select any player and assign the other player as control
The player choosen is trained in one method and the other person is trained in the other method
After the training phase is completed we can allow both th players to practice for the same time period
We will conduct an odd number of games so that there will not be a tie in the results
By doing this we can come to a conclusion if one method is bette than the other
or is it because of other factors
