The principle of superposition states that in a stratigraphic column that is unaffected by faulting, folding etc., the lower stratum will always be older than the stratum on top. This holds true with the Principle of Horizontality that states that every layer of stratum deposited was originally deposited horizontal to the Earth’s surface.  Hence the first layer to be deposited (older) will always lie below the new layers of deposits.
