Question

A researcher decides to study the relationship between the hours that students at a particular local college work, sleep, and study to his or her gpa. He does a survey of students at that local college where he has used a random numbering scheme to select 100 students to send the survey to. Initially his survey questions included questions about class in school—Freshman—Senior, age, marital status, class load, hours of sleep on average during the week and on the weekend, average hours worked during the week and on the weekend, and average study hours in a week. Additionally he asks for their self reported gpa for the past two terms. After conducting a review of the literature on this subject he decides to do both correlational and inferential studies on these relationships. He believes that there is a relationship between work habits and gpa, and one between sleep and gpa. He feels that study habits and gpa are pretty obvious and decides not to do any testing on that as this time. He gets 72 surveys returned and divides them up into groups according to work categories—students who do not work, students who work less than half time, and students who work more than half time. The no work group average 7.1 hours of sleep per night with a standard deviation of 1.3. They study an average of 11.5 hours per week with a standard deviation of 2.7 and have an average GPA of 3.2 with a standard deviation of .75. The less than half time work group averages 6.9 hours of sleep per night with a standard deviation of 1.5. They study an average of 9.9 hours per week with a standard deviation of 1.6 and have an average GPA of 3.25 with a standard deviation of .83. The more than half time work group averages 6.8 hours of sleep per night with a standard deviation of 2.0 and study 10.3 hours per week with a standard deviation of 1.85 and they have an average GPA of 3.5 with a standard deviation of .45. He runs a statistical comparison of average GPA between the groups and finds F= 7.923, p = .032 . He concludes that there is a significant difference between the groups at p =05 and decides to do further tests to see where the difference lies. Wanting to do more with this he decides to do a correlation between hours of sleep per night and gpa. He finds that r =.73 and leaves the conclusions to you. On the following page you will find a basic description of a research study. Use the information provided there to answer the following questions: H. What conclusion did he leave for you to draw? And what was your conclusion. I. Were his conclusions appropriate for the study? J. What were the limitations of the study?

Explanation / Answer
