Question

2. Suppose you conducted a study to determine if practicing yoga regularly reduces anxiety. So you had a sample of participants enroll in a 6-week yoga class and measured their anxiety before and after the study period using the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (a well established measurement survey, where higher scores indicate higher levels of anxiety) a. State the appropriate null and alternative hypotheses for this study. (1pt) b. If you test resulted in a p-value of 0.02, what would be your conclusion? (lpt) c. List a possible confounding variable and briefly describe what impact it might have had on the study results. 2pt)

Explanation / Answer

Let X and Y be the anxiety level before and after the 6-week yoga class. Let D = Y – X.

We assume D ~ N(µ, 2).

Part (a)

Hypotheses:

Null: H0: µ = µ0= 0 Vs Alternative: HA: µ < 0

Part (b)

If the test resulted in a p-value of 0.02, the conclusion is that the null hypothesis H0: µ = µ0= 0 is rejected at a level of significance 2% or more.

Part (c)

If the participant is ailing from any illness, like hypertension etc, which has a bearing on anxiety level, the result of the study is likely to be marred by this factor.
