Question
The table below shows the number of deaths in the U.S. in a year due to a variety of causes. For these questions, assume these values are not changing from year to year, and that the population of the United States is 312 million people.
e) What is the probability that you will die as the result of a tornado next year?
Make sure your answer is accurate to at least 2 significant figures (values after leading zeros)
f) Why is this answer different than the probability for an American chosen at random? the correct answer to this was 553/312000000, why are they different?
Cause Deaths Passenger car occupant (driver or rider) 13,100 Motorcycle (driver or rider) 4,500 Tornado 553 Skydiving 56Explanation / Answer
e) The table clearly shows the number of deaths in U.S out of the total population. So, 553/18209 cannot be the answer to this question.
Now, 553 out of 312 million people die due to a tornado. Since you're one of those in the population. The probability that you will die as the result of tornado next year is number of ways of choosing an American dying from tornado divided by total number of ways of choosing an American at random which is equal to 553/312000000.
f) The probability for an American chosen at random is 1/312000000. The answer is different from above because in this part we're chosing an American at random unconditionally whereas in previous part we were choosing an American out of those who die due to a tornado.
