Question
Jim’s chemistry assignment involved first selecting a common household product that contained one or more active ingredients. Once he had chosen the product he needed to select one of the active ingredients and record some basic information about the active ingredient and product and then complete some related calculations. Referring to the assignment handout he recorded the following information:
Product Name: Clinique Redness Solutions (his mother’s, he found the box in the bathroom)
Container Size: 1.35 FL OZ
Chosen Active Ingredient: Zinc Oxide
Active Ingredient Concentration: 2.0%
Cost of Product: $29.50
The assignment handout indicated he needed to complete the following calculations:
1. How many molecules of the chosen active ingredient is in the container?
2. What is the cost, in dollars, of one molecule of the chosen active ingredient?
Your job is to play the part of Jim and answer these two questions in your written assignment. Of course you can not just simply state your answers to the above questions. You will need to show and or explain how you determined your answers to the above questions. You may need to consult some reference source(s) for additional information in order to correctly answer the above questions. If you do be sure to cite them at the end of your assignment.
Explanation / Answer
First of all convert Fl OZ to ml, the relation is that 1fl oz =29.5ml
hence 1.35 FL OZ =39.924 mL
it is given that concentration of active ingredient = 2%, hence its volume percent =39.924*2/100 =0.798mL
Numbers of moles of ZnO is calculated as
22400mL contains 1 mol, hence 0.798 mL contains,
1/22400 *0.798 =3.56*10-5 mol
now 1 mol contains 6.023*1023 molecules hence 3.56*10-5 moles contains
6.023*1023 *3.56*10-5 =21.44*1018 molecules.
(2) cost of 1 molecules of active ingredients can not be determined because there are other ingredients also present and their cost very item to item. for this calculation we need complete ingredients information with their respective price.
