Question
PLease don't just give the solution if you could please explain how you find the answer using excel formulas.. thank you!
The following data represents the GPA of a sample of 15 students enrolled in a math class. Use Excel and round to 4 decimal places. For quartiles use the -QUARTILE.EXC function. GPA 3.86 2.82 3.26 3.14 3.05 2.69 2.95 3.62 2.4 1.84 1.96 1.91 2.58 1.88 1.75 (a) Find the first quartile. 1.75 (b) Find the third quartile. 3.86 (c) Find the mean. |2.64 | (d) Find the median. 2.69 (e) Find the range. 2.11 | (f) Find s. 1.67863/ (g) Find the interquartile range. 2.11 (h) What are the lower and upper limits to find outliers? LL:5.538 (i) Find s2. 46055Explanation / Answer
Assuming your data of 15 values is stored in A1, A2,...,A14, A15.
(a) For the first quartile, enter the following text in any cell :
=QUARTILE.EXC(A1:A15, 1)
(b) For the third quartile, enter the following text in any cell :
=QUARTILE.EXC(A1:A15, 3)
(c) For the mean, enter the following text in any cell :
=AVERAGE(A1:A15)
(d) For the median, enter the following text in any cell :
=QUARTILE.EXC(A1:A15, 2) or MEDIAN(A1:A15)
(e) For the range, find minimum and maximum values and subtract them.
Minimum value:
=MIN(A1,A15)
Maximum value:
=MAX(A1,A15)
Then subtract the above two values to get range.
(f) For standard deviation,
=STDEV(A1:A15)
(g) We have Q1 and Q3 already. Subtract the two values Q3-Q1 to get IQR.
(h) For upper fence (UL) and lower fence (LL) :
UL = Q3 + 1.5*IQR
LL = Q1 - 1.5*IQR
Use these formulas to calculate the values. There's no ready formula to calculate UL and LL directly from data.
(i) For Variance or (Standard deviation)2
=VAR(A1,A15)
That's it!
Cheers!
