Question
In Table 2, the authors present Pearson correlations for the relationship between all of the personality scales and two different measures of delinquency (self-reported and informant-reported) among both males and females. Answer the following questions about the correlations (exclude the correlation for R2 in your answer):
a. Which is the strongest correlation in the entire table? Be sure to include the value of the correlation and describe the correlation (which variables are correlated). [1pt]
b. Which is the weakest correlation in the entire table? Be sure to include the value of the correlation and describe the correlation (which variables are correlated). [1pt]
c. Which scales are consistently positively correlated with delinquency across both genders and both measures of delinquency? Interpret one positive relationship in sentence form (in the form of, as X increases, what happens to Y). [2pts]
d. Which scales are consistently negatively correlated with delinquency across both genders and both measures of delinquency? Interpret one negative relationship in sentence form (in the form of, as X increases, what happens to Y). [2pts]
Table 2. Correlations between Self-Reported Delinquency and Informant-Reported Delinquency and Person- ality Variables by Sex in the New Zealand Sample Self-Reported Delinquency Informant-ReporteExplanation / Answer
Answer:
Part a
The strongest correlation in the entire table is given as the correlation between the two variables such as Aggression and males self reported delinquency. The correlation coefficient between these two variables is given as 0.52 which is statistically significant at 5% level of significance. There is a considerable positive linear association exists between two variables Aggression and males self reported delinquency.
Part b
The weakest correlation in the entire table is given as the correlation between the two variables such as Achievement and males self reported delinquency. The correlation coefficient between these two variables is given as 0.00 which means there is no any linear association exists between these two variables.
Part c
The MPQ scales Aggression, Alienation, Stress reaction, and social potency are consistently positively correlated with delinquency across both genders and both measures of delinquency. The scale stress reaction is positively correlated with delinquency across both genders and both measures of delinquency. All correlation coefficients are positive in nature. As the stress reaction increases, the self reported delinquency in males and females also increases. The correlation coefficients are given as 0.26 and 0.17 respectively.
Part d
The MPQ scales Traditionalism, Harm Avoidance, and Control are consistently negatively correlated with delinquency across both genders and both measures of delinquency. The scale Traditionalism has negative correlations with self reported delinquency for males and females. As the traditionalism increases, the self reported delinquency decreases.
