Question

(a) Which of the above research groups conducted a cross-sectional study: A, B, C, or none of them?(Please write exactly ONE answer below, even if there are multiple correct choices. You are not required to explain your reasoning.)

(b) Which of the above research groups conducted a randomized-controlled experiment: A, B, C, or none of them? (Please write exactly ONE answer below, even if there are multiple correct choices. You are not required to explain your reasoning.)

(c) Based on the results of the two studies above, do you believe that the consumption of organic vegetables reduces the risk of cancer in residents of Los Angeles? Explain your answer very briefly.

(d) In Research Group B’s study, EXPLAIN confounding variables, suggest at least one confounding variable and explain how they could control for this confounding variable in their study.

1. "Does the consumption of organic vegetables reduce the risk of cancer in residents of Los Angeles?" Three different research groups set out to answer this same question, each using a different approach outlined below A. Research Group A selected a random sample of 1000 people in L.A. in 2017 and surveyed them about their current levels of organic vegetable consumption and their cancer diagnoses. They find that the people in their sample who currently ate more organic vegetables had higher cancer rates than those who ate less organic vegetables B. Rescarch Group B randomly selected a group of 500 people in L.A. in 2010. Each year, from 2010 to 2017, they surveyed the same group of people about their consumption of organic vegetables, as well as their cancer diagnoses (if any). They found that those who eat more organic vegetables over time also tend to have much lower cancer rates C. Research Group C randomly selects a group of 200 ple in L.A. in 2010 and they offer to buy all of their fruits and vegetables for 7 years. Half of the participants will be randomly chosen to receive only organic vegetables, while the other half will be given only non-organic vegetables The participants and their doctors will not be told whether or not their vegetables are organic In this study, rescarchers found no association between the consumption of vegetables and peo cancer rates

Explanation / Answer

Solution

(a) A research group conducted a cross sectional study as,

Cross-sectional study is a research tool used to capture information based on data gathered for a specific point in time

(b) C research group  conducted a randomized-controlled experiment

as it randomly assigns participants into an experimental group or a control group. As the study is conducted, the only expected difference between the control and experimental groups in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) is the outcome variable being studied.
