Question

5. (5 points) Choosing a school for your child to can have a critical impact on that child's future. The frequency polygons below reflect the Regents exam scores of 50 students who attended the Macy School (dashed line) and 50 students who attended the Coffin School (solid line) in Brooklyn. [The Regents exams are scored on a scale of 0-100 with 100 being the best possible score.] Based on the patterns you see in these two frequency polygons, which school would you choose for your child and why? Explain your interpretation of this data in terms of the most relevant statistics that we have learned. Regents Exam Scores 2005 Jared Coffin Josiah 5 15 40 50 60 70 80 90 100 Score (18 pts) A researcher who is interested in the effect of price on perceived quality gives a group of 50 students sneakers which are described to them as "expensive", while another group of 50 students receives the very same sneakers which are described to them as "discount." The students are then to rate the perceived quality of the sneakers on a scale using only one of the following values (0-poor quality, 1-satisfactory quality 2-good quality, 3-very good quality, 4=superior quality) to see if there is a difference based on price description. 6. A) What is the independent variable? B) What is the dependent variable? C) Is the dependent variable discrete or continuous? D) What scale of measurement (nominal, ordinal, interval or ratio) is used to measure the dependent variable? E) What research method is being used (experimental or observational), and why? F) If, instead of measuring the perceived quality of shoes, the researcher decides to measure the distance each individual can jump off of the ground (in 2 centimeters), which of the above answers changes? And what is/are the new answer(s)? (16 pts) The first exam grades of last semester's Stats class had a mean of 67 with a standard deviation of 5 points. Answer the following questions: 7.

Explanation / Answer

5) FROM ABOVE GRAPH WE CAN SEE THAT FOR SOLID LINE FREQUENCY POLYGON THE MOST FREQUENTLY OBSERVED SCORE IS 70 SCORE WHICH IS ALSO KNOWN AS MODE AND FOR DASHEDLINE FREQUENCY POLYGON IT IS APPROX 75 SCORE( MODE).

ALSO SOLID LINE FREQUENCY POLYGON SHOWING THAT MINIMUM SCORE IS 60 AND MAXIMUM IS 85 WHILE FOR DASHED LINE FREQUENCY POLYGON MINIMUM SCORE IS 55 AND MAXIMUM SCORE IS 100.

BY COMBINING ABOVE POINTS WE ALSO FIND THAT MEAN SCORE OF DASHED LINE GRAPH WILL BE GREATER THAN THE MEAN SCORE OF SOLID LINE FREQUENCY POLYGON.

THERFORE BY ABOVE POINTS I WILL SELECT MACY SCHOOL FOR MY CHILD.

PLEASE NOTE: PLEASE REPOST QUESTIONS 6 AND 7 SEPARATELY. THANK YOU.
