Question
Hi,
My prof keeps refering to the "table" in his lectures regarding margin of error and interval estimates. I have no idea which table he is talking about but he "encourages us to figure it out on own own". Well I cant. So specifically the +/- 1.96 I realize it comes from a distribution table but which one and how do I find it.
Thanks

1.96 comes from the Normal Distribtion. In the given example, we are interested in finding the 95% Confidence Interval of difference between two means and here population Standard deviation are known , so we use Z or Normal Distribution
You can find 1.96 either by using normal table or you can use technology ( Excel), We have to find the value such that area to the left is (0.95+(1-0.95)/2)
Use excel function
NORMSINV(0.95+(1-0.95)/2)
= 1.96
