Question
1-10. Certain conclusions are below though I do now know if they are correct.
1: The probability of turning yellow is 13/30, based on the green being 20 seconds long, red 34, and the yellow light lasting 6 seconds.
2: you must know how long the red light has been flashing to determine if it will not turn green for 15 seconds?
5: 50% probability
6: 50% probability
Most of the probability examples you study in this chapter are about discrete These situations involve numbers of people, money amounts, can apply probabilities to con tinuous situations as we and so on. You ACTIVITY A traffic signal is green for 20 seconds out of every minute. Find the probability that the signal will be green when you turn the corner and first see it. You can model the signal's color intervals by using a number line. 40 20 Let an interval of 60 represent one cycle of green, yellow, and red. Inside that interval, an interval of 20 represents a green light. You come across the signal at a random point in time, so P(green) total time ofcycle EXERCISES 1. The traffic signal is green when you first see it. What is the probability that it will turn yellow within 5 seconds? 2. The traffic signal is red when you first see it. What do you need to know to find the probability that it will not turn green for another 15 seconds? The following continuous situations involve functions and conic sections that you have studied to this point. For each, assume that you pick real numbers a and b at random between 0 and 10. The point (a, b) is in the upper triangle formed by the diagonals of a square whose sides lie on axes and the lines x 10 and y 10.Explanation / Answer
1.
We know: Green : 20 sec , Yellow : 6 sec , Red : 34 sec
The traffic signal is Green when you first saw it.
Prob( it will turn yellow in 5 seconds) = ?
We know, it's the green light and green is there for 20 seconds. And there are 5 seconds for yellow to be. That means I looked at it again when red light passed away exactly 15 seconds. Among those 20 seconds, this can happen only once.
So,
Prob( it will turn yellow in 5 seconds) = 1/20
For 2. , 5. and 6 , you got the correct answers.
