Echinodermata 2. Arthropoda 3. Cnidaria 4. Chordata 5. Annelida Answers to these questions can be found in Appendix: Self-Quiz Answers 15. THE PROCESS OF SCIENCE 10. Imagine that you are a marine biologist. As part of your exploration, you dredge up an unknown animal from the seafloor. Describe some of the characteristics you should look at to determine the phylum to which the creature should be assigned. 11. Vegan and vegetarian diets are increasingly popular. While vegans consume no animals or animal products, many vegetarians are less strict. Talk to acquaintances who describe themselves as vegetar- ians, or who follow a meat-free diet, and determine which taxonomic groups they avoid eating (see Figures 17.6 and 17.30). Try to general- 16. ize about their diet. What do they consider "meat"? For example, do they avoid eating vertebrates but eat some invertebrates? Do they avoid only birds and mammals? What about fish? Do they eat dairy products or egg5? 12. What adaptations inherited from our primate ancestors enable humans to make and use tools? 370

Explanation / Answer

10. To find the phylum we can look at the basic characteristics:

11. Vegetarian avoid eating meat which is flesh derived by animal slaughter such as birds, fishes and mammals. They also avoid eggs but consume dairy products like milk, cheese etc. They also consume honey and microbes fermented products like alcohol, curd, etc.

12. The change of adaptation from arboreal to terrestrial made our primate ancestors to invent stone tools, basically for hunting. Later the needs made them to invent more tools for building and farming. Several primate characteristics make it easy for us to make and use tools- opposable fingers and thumb, and great sensitivity to touch. Primates also have a larger brain, forward-facing eyes for depth perception and eye-hand coordination.
