Question
In each of the situations below an experiment is conducted. Determine whether or not the experiment is a binomial experiment. If so, explain (i) what a trial is, (ii) what a success is, (iii) what n and p are, and (iv) where the independence assumption comes in. If the experiment is not binomial, explain why not. a. a fair die is rolled 40 times and the number that comes up is recorded. b. a mathematics student decided to toss a fair coin until he got two heads in succession. This was achieved after 12 tosses.
Explanation / Answer
a) If we define the success as number of times even number/odd number/1/2/3/4/5 or 6(any of these) occurs in 40 trials.
then n=40,for the case of number of times even number occurs in 40 trials,
success=even number occurs,p=3/6
since in each case what the outcome occurs is independent of the outcome of the previous time.
So,independence assumption comes in.
b) not a binomial experiment.
since number of trial is not fixed here.for a paricular case it comes out to be equal to 12.But in another case,it may be equal to some other integer.In binomial experiment,number of trial is always fixed.
