Well, what we have to do is provide an example of this distribution applied to operations and/or processes, then, an example, is the case of the operation of filling the boxes of cereal, one of the important dimensions of quality is the weight of the product inside the box. Suppose that management took the decision that the machine must produce boxes with an average weight of 425 grams. To achieve this, could be assigned to an inspector function periodically take a sample of five boxes filled by machine and calculate the sample mean (a variable measurement) to determine what so satisfactory operation of the machine.

If you draw a graph with a large number of those values means, would appreciate that they have their own distribution, with a 425 grams-centric media, as well as the distribution of the process, but with one much less variability. The reason for this is that the average values compensate for the highest and lowest figures registered, to determine the weight of different boxes.
