Harvest rate I
Harvest rate II
Harvest rate III
All of the above
None of the above
Explanation / Answer
22. The answer is Harvest Rate II . The solid line in the graph of population size plotted against the recruitment rate shows how competition affects the yield and also how decreased population reduces the yield. Thus the maximum sustainable yield (MSY) is at the point where population is at optimal level for harvesting . This condition is fulfilled by the harvest rate II . One should remember that it is not the maximum but the optimum population level where the MSY occurs.
23. The process where the concentration of certain chemical compounds increases in the biotic tissues at higher trophic levels is called biomagnification. E.g. suppose the goats feeds on the grass with some level of pesticides and those goats are consumed by a tiger. The level of pesticide found in the tiger will be much larger than in the grass as the number of goats consumed by the tiger will be higher and thus greater the concentration of pesticide.
