Question

still q1

In early August 2011, a weather presenter on a UK regional TV programmed commented that July 2011 had been warmer than average for the region, as had nine out of the last ten Julys. Table 1 shows the mean July temperatures for that region for the ten years 2002-2011. Explain what is meant in this context by 'the average July temperature'. (Guideline: one or two sentences.) State which of the last ten Julys was the one that was colder than average, explaining your reasoning. (Guideline: one sentence.) Solely on the basis of the data in Table 1 and the weather presenter's comment, explain what you can say about the range within which the average July temperature for the region must lie. (Guideline: one or two sentences.)

Explanation / Answer

e) (i) average july temperature = (sum of july temperatures over n years)/n.

where n can be any number greater than 1.

we consider average value as the typical value for july temperature.

(ii) year 2002 is the year which had colder than average temperature 15.3.

it is given that only one value is less than averge value. so the least value in the given data will be the one, less than the average value.

(iii)range is 15.4 to 16.4 (according to the given data.)

the reason is that 15.3 is below average temperature and the next highest value 16.5 is above average temperature. so the range must be 15.4 to 16.4
