Wild-type leaves are pointed, and a recessive mutation in this gene causes them to be smooth. The following crosses were performed:

Cross 1: pure breeding white, smooth X pure breeding wild type gives F1: all red, pointed

Cross 2: red, pointed F1 X pure breeding white, smooth (test cross)

gives F2:

40 white, smooth

36 red, pointed

10 white, pointed

14 red, smooth

The answer is

If the genes are linked we can find two different categories, one category with high frequency genotypes and another category contains low frequency genotypes.

The high frequency catergory represents the parental categories where as the low frequency catergories represent the recombinant catergories.

Here, the 40 white, smooth and 36 red, pointed represents the parental categories and 10 white, pointed and 14 red, smooth represens the recombinant categories.

So, the Recombination frequency = Total number of recombinants / Total number of progeny x 100.

So, the RF = 10+14/ 40+36+10+14 *100 = 24/100 *100 = 24.

The Distacne between the two genes is 24 Map Units or 24 Centi Morghans.
