Question

John and Beth are husband and wife. One day, they were discussing finances. Beth accused John of spending too much money on lunch. Beth said,"Suppose you tell me how much you spent on lunch each of the last three days."

- John said, "Okay but I will make you figure it out. Each day i spent a whole number of dollars. If you multiply the amounts I spent each day, the answer is 144."

- He then said, "The total amount I spent for the three days is the same amount as what you spent on golf last weekend." Beth knew how she had spent, but that still wasn't enough to figure out the answer.

- His final clue was,"Well one of the meals cost less than $3." Which proved to help Beth figure out how much John spent on each meal.

How much did John spend on each meal?

-

Explanation / Answer

144=2^4*3*2

If he spend one day less than $3 , then he must have spent $1 or $2.

If $1 , spent in 1 day then , possible money spent on 3 days

[1 ,9 ,16] ,[1,3,48], [1,6,24], [1,12,12],[1,36,4][1,8,18],[16,9]

If $2 , spent in 1 day then , possible money spent on 3 days

[2,3,24],[2,9,8],[2,18,4],2,36,2]
