Question

A bell tower chimes each hour at 10 minutes before the hour, and on the hour. The tower chimes 24 hours a day, but it uses a 12-hour clock (for example, it chimes 12 times at midnight and at noon.) Every time it chimes, it plays a 20-note tune, which is broken into five parts of the 4 notes each. In addition to this, when it chimes on the hour, it also chimes out the time. So at 10 o'clock it would chime 10 times more after going through it's 20-note tune. When it chimes for the hour, the chimes last 1 second, and theres is a 1-second pause between chimes. There is a 2-second pauses between the end of the 20-note tune and the beginning of the hour chimes.

How much time every day does the bell tower spend chiming, including the pauses between chimes?

Explanation / Answer

Here time taken to play 20-note tune is not given. Let us consider time taken by tune is 20 seconds.

Below is the table for each hour,

This gives value for 408 seconds for 12 hours. For 24 hours it would be 816 seconds.

i.e. 13.6 minutes everyday
