Question

Assume that Elodea leaf cells are rectangular and that their width and depth are both about 25% of the length. Calculate the volume of one Elodea cell in cubic millimeters (mm^3) and in cubic micrometers (mu m^3). (See Appendix 1 for conversion factors) Calculate how many of these Elodea cells would fit into one cubic centimeter (cells/cm^3). Enter all data and calculations below. Depth of one cell = 25% of the length of one cell = mm Width of one cell = 25% of length of one cell = mm Volume of one Elodea cell = mm^3 (cubic millimeters) (Show calculations) Converting mm^3 to mu m^3: 1 mm^3 = mu m^3 (Show calculations) Volume of one Elodea cell = mu m^3 (cubic micrometers) (Show calculations) Number of Elodea cells in cm^3 = (Show calculations.) Looking at the drawing of the 1cm^3 cube at the right, should your answer to the number of cells that could fit in this volume be greater or less than one?

Explanation / Answer

Here as 1 mm^3 = 10^9 micrometer

(IT is because 1 mm = 1/1000 meter

and 1 meter = 10^6 micromilimeter)

So as the volume of onle elodea cell is calculated as 0.00005446 mm^3

= 0.00005446 x 10^9 = 54460 micrometer cube. This is second last answer required.

And again as 1 mm = 0.1 cm,

so 1 mm cube = 0.001 cm cube

So above volume in cm cube form = 0.00005446 x 0.001 cm^3

=0.00000005446 cm^3

This is required last asnwer.
