Question

For each research situation below, identify the independent variable and dependent variable. In addition, for each variable (i.e. both independent and dependent) identify its level of measurement and whether it is discrete or continuous. Professor Smith believes that the number of children one has affects the number of hour one will watch television per night. He surveys 100 people and asks them to report the number of children they have and the number of hours of TV they watch per night. The variables are then compared to see if there is a relationship between them. The police have recently closed an adult bookstore near campus. Some students like you are interested in whether neighbors in the area support or do not support this action. To determine this, they gathered a sample of 100 neighbors and asked them the following questions: gender; occupation; social class (i.e. measured low, middle, and high); and whether or not they support the recent closing of the adult bookstore (i.e. measured as a yes or no).

Explanation / Answer

Independent variable is the one which does not depend on other variable. Dependent variable is the one which depends on other variable and its value change according to that.

1. Independent variable: Number of children one has (X)

Dependent variable: Number of hours one will watch television (Y)

Discrete variable are countable in a finite amount of time whereas continuous variable are not.

Both X and Y sre discrete variables.
