The table below shows the haplotypes relative to a small region on chromosome 2 for 10 strains of laboratory mice. All strains are homozygous with respect to the region in question.
Question 1 (9 points) The table below shows the haplotypes relative to a sma region on chromosome 2 for 10 strains of laboratory mice. All strains are homozygous with respect to the region in question. Strain SNP1 SNP2 SNP3 SNP4 SNP5 SNP6 a Based on the data above, what strains are genetically most closely related? b) How many different haplotypes are represented in the table?Explanation / Answer
Answer:
(1) Haplotypes are SNPs (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism) in a chromosome which tend to inherit together as a genetic unit.
(a) From the above data, strains 3 and 4 have the same haplotype (A G C T A C). So, these two strains are more closely related genetically.
(b) Strain 3 and 4 have the same haplotype. So, this haplotype can be considered as type 1. Rest of the haplotypes (8) are different. So, number of different types of haplotypes are 9.
(c) The genetic diversity in the SNPs can be calculated as follows:
SNP1: 1 – (0.64 + 0.04) = 0.32
SNP2: 1 – (0.49 + 0.04 + 0.01) = 0.46
SNP3: 1 – (0.49 + 0.01 + 0.01 + 0.01) = 0.48
SNP4: 1 – (0.49 + 0.04 + 0.01) = 0.46
SNP5: 1 – (0.64 + 0.04) = 0.32
SNP6: 1 – (0.36 + 0.04 + 0.04) = 0.56
The SNP with the highest genetic diversity is SNP6.
