Question

8. Consider a homogeneous, bare, spherical, source-free, critical, uranium-fueled reactor operating at a power Po. Explain how and why the power increases, decreases, or remains unchanged as a result of each of the separate changes to the reactor.

(a) The reactor is deformed into the shape of a football (ellipsoid).

(b) A person stands next to the core.

(c) The temperature of the core is raised.

(d) A neutron source is brought close to the core.

(e) An energetic electron beam impacts the core.

(f) The reactor is run at high power for a long time.

(g) The core is launched into outer space.

(h) A sheet of cadmium is wrapped around the core.

(i) The enrichment of the fuel is increased.

Explanation / Answer

1)By deforming no change in the power generated would take place because power generated does not depend on dimensions of the reactor.

2)No change would happen on the power but instead its possible that the person would get affected by the rays.

3)On raising the temperature power will increase because it will energise the reaction and the bobarding particles(neutron) and emmission of charge particles would increase.

4)Yes it will increase the power generation beacuse more neutron means more integration of uranium that means more energy release and hence more power generated.

5)It wont increase the power, because electron is not that heavy as neutron is.

6)At high power, reaction would go fast and hence power would increase.

7)No effect on the reaction would take place it wount affect the generation of power.

8)cadmium can absorb neutrons which can reduce the reaction rate furthure, hence it would decrease the power generation.

9)The enrichment of fuel would just make sure that reaction will go longer it wont increase the power generation.
