Question
For added perspective, assume that the winds at 300 mb blew from the southwest over the offshore waters of New England at this time.
(2 points) In light of the analysis of 300-mb isotachs name the feature of fast moving winds located off the east coast of the US. Give a proper range for the maximum wind in knots(Hint: watch your units!).
(1 point) Relative to this 300-mb feature, under which of the four "regions" (or "quadrants" as described in the text) is the surface low located? Note: You must use the proper "entrance/exit" terminology when specifying the appropriate quadrant.
(3 points) Using a column weight argument, explain what impact the presence and location of this 300 mb feature is having on the surface low.
(2 points) What specific stage in its life-cycle has this mid-latitude cyclone entered (choose from: initiation, open, early-occlusion, late-occlusion, or dissolving)? Describe the relative strength of the cyclone at this time (for example: still increasing, near maximum, weakening, etc.)

Explanation:
It seems the fast moving winds located off the east coast of the US is subtropical Jet Stream, it usually starts with 50 knots and might go up to 100-200 knots. Polar jets are stronger than subtropical Jet Streams. Mid-latitude cyclones are associated with this Jet Streams. As we can see a trough has formed in the north-east of US, so this is the divergence place where the air is moving out from top air column, so we can tell this is the right rear and left front quadrants of the jet, as the air is raising here. So now the mass of the air column is getting reduced simultaneously the air pressure is reduced thus forming a low pressure at the surface. Now, this low pressure draws the wind to converge which eventually strengthen the cyclone and this sinking of jet stream occurs in the left rear and right front quadrants. A ridge can be seen in the eastern side of Englan, again at the north-eastern corner of the map a low pressure can be seen.
So we can say that the cyclone is near to its maximum strength and early-occlusion.
Hope this will help you.
