Explanation / Answer

Steep red mountain sides and the glacial lake are the two most important features of the Montana's glacier park. These red rocks are part of Grimmerl formation which the metamorphosed sedimentary rocks formed in Precambrian time and is about 790 m thick. The red colour is due to rusting of iron oxides.

Recent geological events have shaped the rocks of the Montana's glacier park into steep walled valleys and sharp mountain peaks. The glaciers covered most of northern Montana during the last glaciation which lasted from 100,000 to 10,000 years. These glaciers cut into pre existing streambeds, carving valleys with nearly vertical walls. Afterwards erosion in the walls mainly due to freezing and thawing in the crevices of rocks filled the valleys with sloping piles of rock and sand. This type of erosion in the valleys resulted in the formation of U shaped valleys. The melting leave behind glacial till which are poorly sorted accumulations of sediments on the valley floor and numerous glacial lakes which are the basins recently filled by the glacial water. Besides that the park is filled with glacial landforms like horns, cirques, aretes, hanging valleys and morains.

The structure which is found in Montana's glacier park is Lewis Overthrust Fault which formed about 170 million years ago when the collision of the crustal plates took places which elevated numerous mountain chains and formed Rocky mountains. The extent of lateral displacement of this overthrust fault is upto 80 kilometers.
