Explanation / Answer

For another giant leap of mankind, the mission to Mars, this will require a three-year-long journey through space, NASA made a 1-year space programme to research how the human body responds to different hurdles in a spaceship programme. Scott Kelly was the first American to spend 1 year in space, and he has been the center of research thereafter. No gravity makes bone lose minerals, dropping density. Although exercises are difficult to perform, without exercise, one can lose 15 % of their bone material, which cannot be recovered even after returning to Earth. Several osteoporosis-related fractures, muscle contraction, cardiovascular problems, vision problems may arise later in life. The confinement, isolation of space makes one more vulnerable to dangerous psychiatric disorders. Working in a close, isolated environment increases stress level hormones, leading to more illness. Even medicines do not work in the same normal way. The most harmful effect is the radiation that an astronaut has to undergo in space. Every food, medicines he or she is taking cannot be completely out of radiation.

Here is the brief summary of some resistive exercise programme which could prevent the changes in human body associated with spaceflight –

The Advanced Resistive Exercise Device (ARED) uses an adjustable resistance piston and flywheel system to imitate free weight exercises through squats, deadlifts, calf raises. These resistive exercises will help to maintain muscle strength and mass in space, increase physical endurance. Fine motor skill testing is performed by astronauts to find out if any changes have taken place in one’s ability to interact with computer-based devices. Functional task testing is to detect and minimize the effect of space on one’s balance and performance. Fluids in the body must be under constant checking so that any problem in vision or muscle can be diagnosed quickly. Periodic fitness self-evaluations must be performed for better evaluation. Effective monitoring techniques must be provided in the spaceflights to check for mental as well as physical disorders in astronauts. Improved food processing, packaging, better preservation are also needed to maintain good health.
