Question

Are there places in your community that have steep slopes? Have landslides occurred there? Why do you think people (like those in La Conchita) choose to live in these places, even after landslides. Ventura County, CA, has invested time and resources to clean up both landslides at La Conchita. Is it fair for the Ventura County taxpayers to say “Enough! Don’t use our money to bail out people who choose to live where there is a high risk of landslides”? Would your answer change if we the conversation was about residents of Carter County, TN and the hazard was flooding (for some perspective, check out this article on the 1998 Doe River flood – click on the links to see the maps and photos (https://www.weather.gov/mrx/doeflood )?

Explanation / Answer

yes, we can see everywhere, that people live in the high-risk zone of the landslide. and time to time they faces landslide events, especially in rainy seasons. but there can be a lot of reason behind this that people still live in those high-risk zones. like

1. lack of education- some people don't know about the landslides and do not know that that area comes under high-risk zone.

2. money shortage - normally prize of the houses in high-risk zones are lower in comparison to other places so people prefer those areas to live because they don't have enough money to buy at a safe place.

3. sudden hazard- because hazards do not give any notice to us of their arrival. sometimes landslides happen at safe zone also. that time we cant does anything about that.

as said in the paragraph that Is it fair for the Ventura County taxpayers to say “Enough! Don’t use our money to bail out people who choose to live where there is a high risk of landslides”? I want to say that what about those people who lived in a safe place but hit by landslides eventually, they didn't choose to live there and the second thing its government responsibility to provide safe places to all people and make some strict regulations and as well as take care of them. although they are also taxpayers. flooding earthquake and other hazards don't have any region, they can happen anywhere so we need to face it together and we have to help each other
