Question

Is there anyone who knows how to do this problem? This is part of an assignment for my Power Electronics course and I really need help! Here's how it work's:

According to the American Wind Energy Association (http://www.awea.org), the total amount of electricity that could potentially be generated from wind in the United States has been estimated at 10.8 x 109 MW-hrs annually. If one-tenth of this potential is developed, estimate the number of 1.5 MW windmills that would be required, assuming that on average a windmill produces only 30% of the energy that it is capable of.

Explanation / Answer

Capacity factor = 30% = 0.3

Total energy produced by one 1.5MW plant in one year = 1.5 *0.3* 24 *365 = 3.942 * 103 M Wh

No of wind plants = (10.8 x 109 )/(10*3.942 * 103) =273972.6 = 273973 plants
