Coal is one of the most widely used fossil fuels because it is abundant and provides a lot of heat energy when burned. How did coal form and what specific major impacts does mining and burning coal have on the natural environment? A recently developed technique for obtaining petroleum and natural gas from the ground is rapidly spreading to locations where previously it was not economical to extract these fossil fuels.
