Question

Fossil fuels are a classified as organic sedimentary rocks (even though particular fossil fuels may be in the form of a liquid or gas). Coal is one of the most widely used fossil fuels because it is abundant and provides a lot of heat energy when burned. How did coal form and what specific major impacts does mining and burning coal have on the natural environment? A recently developed technique for obtaining petroleum and natural gas from the ground is rapidly spreading to locations where previously it was not economical to extract these fossil fuels. This new method is popularly called "Tracking." Briefly explain process of fracking. In your answer include why this process has become so controversial in dry climate states of the western region of the U.S.

Explanation / Answer

Coal made with dead plants under below conditions time, pressure, temperature, water at depth.here heat and pressure produced chemical and physical changes in the plant layers which is forced out oxygen and left rich carbon deposits.

Coals are classified into three ranks by the amount of carbon content

Lignite: low grade,low carbon

Bituminous : intermediate coal also called soft coal

Anthracite: high grade,hard,deep black

Mining and Burning of coal impacts harmfully on natural environment.

Due to mining :Erosion, sink holes formation, loss of biodiversity, contamination of soil, water by chemicals.these all are affects environment.

Due to Burning : toxins are released , large amounts of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere because coal is cheap and abundant many people are reluctant to give it up as a fuel source.it is also cause to global warmig
