Question

Explain some of the processes that shaped the surface of Earth and discuss how Earth's geology stands out from the other terrestrial planets (in the form of an essay)

2.

Which of the Jovian planets is gradually slowing down due to the tidal drag produced by its satellites?

Select one:

a. Jupiter

b. Saturn

c. Uranus

d. Neptune

3.

What is so unusual about Pluto's orbit?

Select one:

a. It lies exactly on the ecliptic.

b. Its orbital period is twice that of Neptune's.

c. It has the lowest eccentricity of any planet's orbit.

d. It is more inclined to the ecliptic than any of the planets.

Explanation / Answer

Processes that shapes the earth's surface are the following:

1) Internal : Geologic processes

a)Earth quakes : Due to earth quakes the internal changes that occurs in the interior part of the Earth can be measured and also can be know through the seismic waves of the Earthquakes.

b)Tsunami : Due to the Earthquake that occur in the ocean bottom causes tsunami which can be used to know the sea geologic features and the changes in the surface of the Earth at the ocean or sea shore.

c)Volcanoes : Magma is forced to land surface and becomes hot lava at the surface being cooled and creates the changes in the earth's crust by forming different features on the surface of the Earth.

Hotspots :Hotspots are the places where it creates a new features on the surface of the Earth.

2)Physical processes :

a)Movement in the tectonic plates in the Earth surface and on the Oceanic crust.

b)Wind

c)Water erosion

d)Deposition -Deposition mainly shapes the features on the Earth' surface.

e)Weathering

f)Mass Wasting

g)Land slides

Difference between the Geology of Earth Terrestrial planet and the other terrestrial planet.

1)Geology of the Earth terrestrial planet has active hydrosphere than others.

2)They all have hard rocky surface.

3)Difference in the climate and atmospheric composition.Earth has climate optimum for the sustenance of life.

4)Venus : a)temperature exceeds 460o c which is 410oC more than the hottest deserts of Earth.

b)Pressure is 100 times higher than Earth.

C)Rotates slower than Earth

d)Venus has no tectonic plates.

5)Mercury : a)Mercury has low temperature .

b)dense planet .

c)Magnetic field of Mercury is 1% of Earth's magnetic field.

6)Mars : a)Mars has warmer summer temperature (200 C) which is no time can drop to -900 C.

b)Mars is the largest planet mountain in the solar system which can rise upto 18,000 feet above the surface.

c)It has very cool surface.

d)It contains craters.

e)It is less dense than the Earth.

f)Smaller Magnetic field occurs.

2Q) Answer is a)Jupiter.

3Q) Answer is d) Pluto is more inclined to the ecliptic than any of the planets. Its inclination is 170
