Question

The Connecticut River illustrates the concept of landscape connectivity at multiple scales. There is the connectivity between the river and its associated uplands, the connectivity within the river network (mainstem and tributaries), and the connectivity between freshwater and saltwater (Connecticut River flows into Long Island Sound). First, think of a large river in a part of the country that is familiar to you. Consider a large river in a part of the country that is familiar to you. For the following questions, compare your familiar river and the Connecticut River. Water quality in rivers is affected by specific land uses in the uplands. What are the major upstream land uses affecting the Connecticut River and your familiar river?

Explanation / Answer

upstream land uses is the process of the management of natural sources for our benefit like water use ina arable field , managed woods etc. But because of land uses we are destroying the natural sources as well as. we used our water resources for a several work like for a drinking water, in agriculture field, in industries etc. but we also impact the water quality by the heavily used of these resources. there is a some effects of land use on the water quality, they are following-

1) fertilizers having a very dangerous chemicals such as nitrogen and phosphorous. these chemicals are mixed with water sources and contaminated them.

2) in the industry, several type of chemicals are present which are the causes of water pollution, after the industrial process , waste material have been flow into the river or lake which is the reson of the contamination of the water resources.

3) dumping the toxic elements in th river or lake by us.

4) runoff of pollutant in the water resources.

5) infiltration of the toxic substance into the aquifer.

6) sewage treatment, landfill are other reasons for impacting the water quality.

7) volatile organic compound is the main pollutant for the water pollution, which is highly used in the industries and other places.

There is a several reasons for impacting water quality, residential pollutant, commercial and point source and non-point source pollution which are responsible for the water pollution. this impact on the water quality is caused by land use.
