5. Original Material: Shale
Geologic Process: Metamorphism
Shale consist of fine grains of sedimentary rocks formed from mud, calcite clay and quartz. The shale undergoes low grade metamorphism and forms fine layers or foliations of clastic material, giving rise to slate. The foliation in slate is easily seen and consists of thin layers that are parallel to each other.
6. Geologic Process: heating and melting
New Material: Silica rich magma
Gneiss can be melted by rising temperature due to subduction at great depths. The temperature causes the Gneiss to melt and to form silica-rich magma which will be over time extruded onto the surface of the earth. This cycle of rock formation of melting under high temperature to form magma and the magma being in turn extruded onto the earth’s crust- completes the rocky cycle.
7. Geologic Process: Weathering
Granite undergoes weathering and crumbles down to form a highly friable rock which can be easily eroded. Though the resistant minerals like feldspar and quartz remain unaffected, the fragments of clay absorb water and forms clay that mixes into the soil profile.
8. New Material: Marble
Distinctive Property: Light coloured, highly compact crystal that can be polished to offer high shine. The hardness is 4 and even though it is not as strong as granite, the rock is more aesthetic.
Metamorphism of limestone causes re-crystallisation of the calcite crystals- bringing the crystals closer together and interlocking to form a beautiful, light coloured rock that is hard enough to be carved and polished.
