Stellarium 2024Eclipse (1) Compatibility Mode Saved to this PC ign Layout References Mailings Review View Help Tell me what you want to do Styles Purpose: Using the PC planetarium program "Stellarium", you will use a computer to look at the April 8, 2024 partial solar eclipse from Chattanooga, , and then take a look at totality from Dallas, Texas. Name: Procedure: This assignment makes use of the free Planetarium software called Stellarium, found at www.stellarium.org. Print out the Stellarium help file (window FI) and refer to it as you work through this assignment. You are asked to save this assignment as an RTF file and submit in the drop box. Set the location for Chattanooga, Tennessee and the time for noon on the day of the partial solar eclipse, April 8, 2024. Zoom in on the Sun until you get a FOV of about 5 degrees (how the Sun would appear through properly filtered solar binoculars). Turn off the atmosphere to better see the new moon's position to the upper right of the sun, and run time forward slowly to find the exact time of first contact (when the new moon first takes a bite out of the sun). 1. First contact occurs at PM for Chattanooga observers. Now run time forward about an hour, until you find the moment of greatest coverage for Chattanooga. Note that Chattanooga is alas well south east of the moon's umbra, and will experience only a about 86% coverage at best. At NO point will it be safe to observe the sun directly without a safe solar filter for your eyes, binoculars, or telescope if you are seeing the partial eclipse! 8 4 5 6 8 9
