Question

Question 4 (10 points) A geologist wants to design an experiment to compare the susceptibility of different minerals to chemical weathering. The tables describe four possible experimental setups. Which setup is most likely to help the geologist meet her objective? Mineral Grain Temperature Reaction Size mm 20C 2 mm 25°C Halite a) Calcite Olivine Quartz Hydrolysis Hydrolysis Hydrolysis Hydrolysis 2 mm 35°C mm 25C Mineral GrainTemperature Reaction Size 2 mm 25°C 6 mm 25°C 12 mm 25°C 24 mm 25°C Hydrolysis Hydrolysis Hydrolysis Hydrolysis Halite b) Calcite Olivine Quartz

Explanation / Answer

4. Answer - d.

To check the susceptibility to chemical weathering between the minerals we should take the same grain sizes at same temperature. In that condition, the minerals will react by different reaction process and by observing the reactions it is easy to determine the susceptibility of that mineral. For example, halite is more susceptible than the quartz.

5. Answer - a.

The development of soil profile requires temperate and humid climate. Arid climate is defined by high temperature and low rainfall. The soil profile is developed well where leaching processes dominate. Therefore, Pit A is much thicker than the Pit B provided the bedrocks are the same.
