Question

Introduction Temperature is an element of weather and climate because it influences many things: air pressure, wind, and water vapor in the air. The sun is the ultimate source of energy; light and heat. Without sunlight life as we know it could not exist. Using your text, answer the following: 1. Briefly define solar radiation: 2. Briefly define solar intensity: 3. What percentage of incoming solar radiation is scattered back into space? 4. What percentage of incoming solar radiation is absorbed by gases in the atmosphere?

Explanation / Answer

1. Solar radiation is the radiation, or energy we get from the sun. It is also known as short-wave radiation. Solar radiation comes in many forms, such as visible light, radio waves, heat (infrared), x-rays, and ultraviolet rays. Measurements for solar radiation are higher on clear, sunny day and usually low on cloudy days. When the sun is down, or there are heavy clouds blocking the sun, solar radiation is measured at zero.
