EXERCISE 10.1o Estimating Potential Flood Problems Name: Course: Section: Date:_ treams shown on maps earlier in the chapter are all subject to flooding, but the potential problems for cities along their banks are not the same. In the following questions, you by potential floods will use the maps from this chapter to estimate problems caused (a) Refer to Figures 10,9a, b, and c. For which of these would a flood 20-feet higher than the current stream channels cause damage to human structures and roads? In each case, describe what would happen (b) Describe the effect of a flash flood that raised the level of the Bighorn River (Fig. 10.4) 20 feet above its banks. Estimate and describe the affected areas (e) Would the Geneseo airport on the east bank of the Genesee River (Fig 10 5) have to be evacuated if water rose 20 feet? Explain. (d) Compare the map of the Missouri River with a recent satelite image of the same area in FIGURE 10.21, below. What kind of information does the map add? What information does the satellite image add (e) What things have been built in the Missouri River floodplain that could be destroyed or made unusable in a flood where the river rose 20 feet? How would the loss of these affect relief efforts?Explanation / Answer
a) The cause of the flood is takes place either due to the overflow of the waterfrom the water bodies due to the heavy and long term raining or due to some natural calamities like thunderstorm and cloud brusting. in most cases the flood is proved to be destructive for the human infrastructure due to the geological features and the specification at that region. by concluding this we can say it will be take place at the region which is down from the sea floor region and the topography of that elevation is negative. from this we can say the region which will suffer maximum destruction is figure 10.9 (b). the 10.9 a have the low elevation with the path way to drain it in the water body and 10.9c have the higher level of human infrastructure than sea floor.
--------------------------------------------
b) This flood will effect a lot in the destrcution of the infrastructure. according to the given figure we can see that the one side of the topography have the higher elevations than that of the other side. it happens due to the fact that one region is full of elevated land and the mounatins on the other hand the other have the plane region. due to this the flood will drag with the high velocity and create the effective destructions.
----------------------------------------------
c) Yes, it need to be evacuted due to the fact that the topography on the other side of the airport have the high elevations as compared with the region of the topography of the airport side. due to which if the level of the flood is exeed than the 20 feet, it will start moving towards this side. as the region have the only single pass by of river and no other channel is located thus all the flood will be rush to this side of the airport. this can be seen in the figure mentioned above.
------------------------------------------------------
d) As if we see both the figures of map and image format than we can see that the river is dry in case of image and in case of map it is filled with the water. the map just showing the geographical characteristics in the form of scale but in case of the image, the actual elevations and the region can be seen. the map shows there is no forest in fact it shows the rocky mountains on the other hand the image shows the actual forest and actual elevations. thus the map is just a scale analysis and the image is actual analysis of the geographical and the topographical chracters of this region.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
e) It is the channel or the boundary which is made to the edges of the river. if the level rise beyond the 20 feet the water pressure and the thrust produced per unit area on the channel will also increases. this will create a thrust and push to the walls. this push will compressed the wall and produce the stress. if there is a small crack developed on the wall then it will start propogating and destroy the whole channel and create the flood. thus this need to stable and properly design so that it can withstand even higher level than 20 feet flood.
